Balraj Sahni was born on 1st May, 1913 at Ravalpindi (British India) as Yudishthir Sahani. He was a versatile actor of Hindi cinema. His debut film was Insaaf. He got popularity from film Do Bigha Zameen. He has acted several films such as Kabuliwala, Seema, Sone Ki Chidiya, Sutta Bazar, Bhabhi Ki Chudiyan, Waqt. He is remembering for song from film Waqt Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen….Beside of Hindi films he acted in several Punjabi films. He passed away on 13th April, 1973.

1 May - Birthday playback singer Manna Dey



The living legend playback singer Manna Dey was born on 1st May, 1920 as Prabohdh Chandra Dey. He started his career in playback singing with the film ‘Tamanna.  Manna Dey has sung several songs and shared the limelight with some legends such as Mohammed Rafi, Talat Mehmood, Kishor Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Kishor Kumar etc. Since childhood, he showed a penchant towards music and was encouraged by his uncle K.C.Dey, who was a renowned music teacher and working with New Theatre. Manna Dey started to receive proper training in music from K. C.Dey and Ustad Dabir Khan at Calcutta. Later he started to received training in classical music from Ustad Aman Ali Khan and Abdul Rahman Khan. He worked as an assistant music director under K.C.Dey and S.D.Burman. His memorable songs are Upar Gagan Vishal, Aye Mere Pyare Watan, Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua, Tu Pyar Ka Sagar Hai, Laga Chunri Mein Dagh, Poochho Na Kaise Rain Bitayee, Phool Gendwa Na Maro, Aye Bhai Zara Dekh Kar Chalo and many mores. Beside of Hindi songs he has sung thousand of songs in different languages and given stage performances throughout the world. Now he lives in Banglore.

30 April- Birthday filmmaker Dadasaheb Phalke.



Dadasaheb Phale is known as the Father of Indian cinema. He was born on 30th April, 1870 as Dhundiraj Govind Phalke in Tryambkeshwar; a holy place of Hindu, where ancient temple of Lord Shiva is situated.  Dadasaheb Phalke was the first person who made and released his first full length movie titled ‘Raja Harishchandra’ in India. His memorable films are Mohini Bhasmasur, Satyavan-Savitri, Lanka Dehan, Shri Krishna Janma, Setu Bandhan and Kaliya  Mardan. His last movie was Setubandhan. He produced his last film Gangavataran. He died on 16th February 1944 at Nashik. Prestigious Award of Indian Cinema ‘Dadasaheb Phalke Award’ is named after him. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award is India’s highest award in cinema given annually by the Government of India for lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. Movie ‘Raja Harishchandra’ was released on 3rd May 1913. That’s why Indian film Industrdy is being celebrated ‘Centenary year of Indian Cinema’ during 3rd May 2012 to 3rd May 2013.

27 April - Birthday actress Zohra Sehgal



Actress Zohra Sehgal was born on 27th April, 2012 as Zohra Mumtaz in Saharanpur (UP, India.) She started her career as dancer with dancer Uday Shankar. She has appeared in several Hindi films as well as English language films and television serials. Her memorable films are Dharti Ke Lal, Neecha Nagar, Bhaji on the Beach, Bend It Like Beckham, Dil  Se, Cheeni Kum, Hum Dil De Chuke Sananm, Veer Zara, Kabhi Khusi Kabhi Gham, Saawariya etc. Died on 10.07.204.

30 April - Death anniversary music director C. Arjun.



Music director C. Arjun was born on 1st September, 1933. He started his career with compsing for a Sindhi film Abana. His first Hindi film as a music composer was Road No 303. He is well known for his super hit film ‘Jai Santoshi Maa’. One of his most memorable songs was ‘Pas baitho tabiyat behal jayege from film Punar Milan. He composed song for films such as Mair Aur Mera Bhai, Ek Saal Pehle, Guru Aur Chela, Love in Kashmir, Raksha Bandhan, Subah Zaroor Aayegi, Karwa Chauth, Kanoon Aur Mujrim, Sati Naag Kanya. He has composed music for a Sindhi film Sindhu-Je-Kenare. He died on 30th April, 1992.

Renowned film maker Kidar/Kedar Nath Sharma was born on 12th April, 1910 in a village called Narowal of Punjab region (Now Pakistan). He was writer, poet, lyricist, painter, still photographer, director and producer. In other words he was complete film maker because of his knowledge of each and every field of film making. He started in Hindi film industry as a still photographer and went on to become one of the legends. He got an oppourtunity in film Devdas, when Kidar was asked to write dialogue and lyrics for film Devdas. This film was superhit in all aspects across India. This film gave birth to three doynes in Hindi film industry – Bimal Roy, K.L.Saigal and Kidar Sharma. His directorial debut film was Tumhair Jeet. His memorable films are Neki Aur Badi, Humari Yaad Aayegi, Bawre Nain, Jogan, Sohag Raat, Fariyad, Kajal etc. This great legend died on 29th April, 1999.

26 April - Death anniversary music director Shankar




Music director Shankar (of Shankar-Jaikishan) was born on 25th October, 1922 in Gadarwara (MP, India) as Shankar Singh Raghuvanshi. Shankar was an assistant of music composer duo Husnlal-Bhagatram. Shankar met his future working partner Jaikishan outside of the office of Mr Chandravadan Bhatt. After some time they became very close friends and started work together. Raj Kapoor gave them break as music director in his film Barsat. This film was a superhit in all aspects. Music of this film was outstanding. After this film they never looked back and work together more than two decades in Hindi Film Industry. Shankar died on 26th April, 1987.

25 April - Death anniversary Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan



Bade Ghulam Ali Khan was born on 02nd April, 1902 in Kasur, a village in Punjab. Bade Ghulam Ali Khan belonged to a family of hereditary musicians.  His father Ali Baksh was a court musician in Kashmir.  Ghulam Ali was initiated into vocal music as well as the Saarangi at a very early age, mainly by his uncle Kale Khan. He initially earned his living by playing Saarangi before becoming a full-fledged singer. Countrywide publicity came to him soon after his debut concert in Kolkata and by the mid-40s he was a much-reputed singer. Musicologists say, Bade Ghulma Ali Khan was the Tansen of the 20th century. He died on 25th April, 1968.

He is best known for his films such as Waqt, Dhool Ka Phool, Ittefaq, Baghban, Insaf Ka Tarazu, Naya Daur, Sadhana, Kanoon, Gumrah, Humraaz Nikah and television epic serial Mahabharata. His directorial debut film was Afsana. He was one of them, who made films on social issues and his film stories were based on women character. He died on 5th November, 2008.
